On 26 October 2026, 30 ChiSoc members had a most interesting visit to Veolia’s waste handling facility in Portsmouth. This comprises two distinct processing plants:
– MRF Materials Recovery Facility – separates mixed recyclable waste (paper, card, plastics, metals, etc., with the residue passed to the ERF
– ERF Energy Recovery Facility – incinerates non-recyclable household rubbish and resiidual waste from the MRF, while separating metals that can be sent for reprocessing.
The ERF generates sufficient energy to power both processing plants, with excess exported to the grid – in total enough to power many homes. See a Portsmouth News article for an overview of the process.
Note that, unlike in West Sussex, glass is collected separately in Hampshire.
