We are the civic society for Chichester founded in October 1973 at a public meeting called by artist David Goodman to protest against the wholesale demolition of parts of the city. This was followed by a Town Meeting held in the Cathedral in June 1974 attended by some 1,500 citizens. Present membership exceeds 700.
Since then we have kept a watching brief on new developments and plans, participated in public consultations organised by local authorities and organised meetings and events on items of topical interest.
We produce various publications and a quarterly Newsletter which is distributed to members and covers stories of topical and civic concern – click here to see back copies. For the latest edition it’s necessary to become a member – join the Society.
We are also on Twitter whose feeds are shown on every page.
We also initiate and run projects that support our aims and objectives, one such project being the production of various heritage trails for which a dedicated website (opens in new link) has been established.
The Chichester Society is a registered charity (No. 268055).
